Product Description
A Live Center / Revolving Center, used on CNC lathes and in certain machining center applications, is a precision support device designed to support the workpiece from its center while allowing the center tip to rotate together with the workpiece during machining.
Inside the body of the live center, there is a high-precision bearing system. The center tip contacts the center hole of the workpiece and rotates with the part through the bearings. Compared with a fixed center, this significantly reduces friction and heat generation, providing safer and more accurate support, especially at higher spindle speeds.
On CNC lathes, the live center is generally mounted in the tailstock and is commonly used to support long, slender, or flexible workpieces that may deflect during machining. This helps reduce vibration, bending, and dimensional deviation, resulting in improved surface quality and machining accuracy.
On vertical machining centers, a live center is not typically used as standard spindle equipment. However, it can be used together with a 4th axis, rotary table, or indexing unit to support the opposite end of the workpiece during rotary machining operations.
The main advantages of live centers are high rotational accuracy, low friction, reduced vibration and deflection, suitability for high-speed operation, and improved stability when machining long workpieces. For this reason, they are widely used in precision machining applications where additional workpiece support is required.
